Math Units
Unit One - Number Sense We begin the year with a unit on number sense. This includes the concepts of place value and rounding/estimating. We will also review addition with regrouping and subtraction with borrowing. Unit Two - Graphing In our graphing unit, we begin by learning about surveys, tally tables, and frequency tables. Students will also review horizontal and vertical bar graphs. We will focus on the parts of a graph, including scale. Students will also be introduced to line plot graphs this year. The main focus of the unit is problem solving with graphs. Unit Three - Multiplication (Chapters 6 - 10) We'll start out learning about how addition and multiplication are related. We will practice making equal groups and writing related addition and multiplication sentences. Students will practice using repeated addition to solve multiplication facts that they have not yet memorized. We will also create arrays as another visual representation of a multiplication sentence. Of course our unit will include lots of problem solving practice and algebra (finding missing factors). Please continue to practice multiplication facts at home. We will have weekly multiplication timed tests! Vocabulary: factor, product, repeated addition, array, commutative property of multiplication, identity property of zero, identity property of one. Unit Four - Division (Chapters 11-13) In this unit, students learn that division and multiplication are inverse operations. We start out with manipulatives to give students a chance to divide by creating their own equal groups. We move in to using repeated subtraction and number lines to show division problems. We also use fact families to show the relationship between division and multiplication. To end the unit, students will learn the meaning of remainders. We will work with word problems that help students understand remainders. Vocabulary: dividend, divisor, quotient, properties of division, equal groups, repeated subtraction. At this time of the year, we do not work on long division. That will come in the spring. Unit Five - Geometry (Chapter 16) In third grade, geometry focuses on plane figures. We work with both polygons and circles. This unit is full of vocabulary! Students will review lines and angles, and then dive into naming triangles by their sides and angles. We'll spend a lot of time naming quadrilaterals. Did you know that a square is also a rectangle? This is a fun unit with lots of hands-on activities. We'll work through a vocabulary packet to help keep track of all the vocabulary in this unit. Unit Six - Fractions & Decimals (Chapters 20-21) We start out reviewing fractions as part of a whole and part of a group. We'll use fraction bars and fraction circles to help us visualize these concepts. In third grade we only work with like denominators. We will add and subtract fractions and work on lots of problem solving. We'll also look at decimal fractions to the tenths place. We will learn about place value on the right side of the decimal point. We will also add and subtract with decimals. Unit Seven - Measurement In this unit, we'll learn about both customary and metric units. We'll begin by learning to read a ruler and measure inches, half-inches, and quarter-inches. Student will learn about inches, feet, yards, and miles and decide when it is appropriate to use each unit of measurement. We'll also convert units between inches, feet, and yards. We'll move into metric units and also measure centimeters and millimeters. Students will also learn when it is appropriate to measure with millimeters, centimeters, meters, and kilometers. As with customary units, students will convert between metric units. |
